Home / Basement Conversion /

Eaton Pl, Knightsbridge

This project involved an extensive conversion and renovation of a listed building not five minutes’ walk from Buckingham Palace Gardens.

The Eaton place home had a lot to work with. It had a spacious loft and plenty of potential for a large basement. On the other hand, it was a listed building and there were tight restrictions on just how much we could actually change.

Luckily, what you add underground does not show much. On the ground floor, a massive steel frame was inserted which formed part of the construction of the basement, allowing for a kitchen running the full length of the rear extension, and leading on to an elegant open plan TV / snug area. This allowed us to re-purpose the old kitchen and dining rooms on the ground floor. The new ground floor is largely open-plan, featuring a very large family living room as well as a double sized formal sitting room well suited to entertaining.

The new sitting room had once been the garage/carriage house, and we were of course required to maintain the original wide doors. As you can see, this was no barrier at all to making this a wonderful, bright and inviting space, and a true triumph for our interior design team.

Moving upwards again, we turned our attention to that large loft. We were able to fit in two full bedrooms without either feeling cramped, and used a coffered ceiling with indirect lighting effect to simulate a translucent skylight for each.
