Portland Rd, Holland Park

LUX Construction had a freer hand with this property on Portland road, as it was not listed and there were few planning restrictions. We look forward to opportunities to flex our design muscles and add the kind of touches that make a home stunning, whilst remaining a comfortable place to live.

The first thing we did was to assess how much reinforcement this structure would need to support excavating a basement. The ground floors were to be replaced with wood in phase two, so we removed them entirely and put in a steel frame which would remain sturdy after we started digging.

The design plan we came up with called for wide, open spaces everywhere. Every room on the main floor, as well as both stairwells, would open onto each other via a wide central room. This would form the hub of the home, so we made sure its aesthetic carried on throughout. The stairs and floor are now a matching, light-stained oak, offset with a darker stain on the door frames.

Next we addressed the lighting. You can do a great deal with the many kinds of electric lighting solutions available today but nothing beats natural sunlight, even in The Big Smoke. We put in a raised deck off the dining room, and wide glass doors opening onto the deck. Both the sitting and dining rooms were fitted with massive louvered skylights that provide excellent light even on overcast days and can be closed on those rare days the sun is cracking the pavers.

We incorporated a gas fire and widescreen tele combination in the new dining area, which opens out onto the patio with wide sliding glass doors. The patio itself was excavated to provide a sunken effect – and a bit of extra privacy. The addition of high wooden fencing and a few small trees assure that neither the patio nor the windows opening onto it are overlooked.
