Hay’s Mews, Piccadilly

This project involved a very extensive renovation of a home on Hay’s Mews, between Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park. The owners knew the home had a great deal of potential, but wasn’t living up to it by half. Understanding how demanding this project would be, they sought bids from the most prestigious firms in London, and in the end chose LUX Construction to handle all aspects of the work.

More and more home owners are turning to companies like LUX Construction to completely reinvent city homes, and this property is a prime example why. Like many older homes, this property made very poor use of space, at least from a modern perspective. The floor plan was inconvenient and a great deal of usable space was effectively lost to a poorly maintained terrace along the rooftop.

Starting at the bottom, LUX Construction started excavations and put in a large, multi-room basement which we would fit out as a home theatre and lounge. Fieldstone was used for the walls for a traditional, earthy feel which serves as a strong counterpoint for the austere, modern styling elsewhere. The audio/video equipment is hidden behind cupboard panels when not in use, and the entire room is unobtrusively wired for full Dolby surround sound.

We also fitted out the loft with a bedroom and en suite bath. The copper-clad enamelled bath is a knot to the elegance of the past but features all the modern conveniences as well. After making this space as much a part of the home as the main section, our work would normally be done. However, this property gave LUX Construction the opportunity to go above and beyond common expectations.

Our in-house design and construction teams worked together to turn the unimpressive rooftop space into a modern terrace, installing wooden decking behind railings and fittings that blended well into the existing neighbourhood’s visuals. This new space is perfect for parties, taking in a sunset, or just a breath of fresh air and enjoying your own section of the sky without being overlooked.
